Asakura Hao[1](朝倉ハオ Asakura Hao, Zeke Asakura in the English Anime and games) is the main antagonist in the Anime and Manga in Shaman King. He was born Asaha Douji(麻案童子, Asaha Doji) in Japan during the Heian era. During his third life he becomes the twin brother of his descendant Asakura Yoh. He is the most powerful shaman in the entirety of the series. His childhood is told in the manga side story Mappa Douji.

Appearance

Being Yoh's twin brother and ancestor, Hao is identical to Yoh in many ways physically, prominently in facial features and body structure. Differing from his younger twin, Hao's hair is much longer in length, reaching past his waist. He often wears a poncho that covers his upper body, but in the anime, it resembles more like a cape and he doesn't wear any other upper body clothing.

He wears fingerless gauntlets with four small protrusions where the knuckles are (two on each hand, imprinted with his name) and as well as a pair of baggy pants with two sections each with a set of three straps on each leg and shoes with two studs protruding from the toes. He also wears a belt embedded with the Patch Village insignia and the straps are lined with it as well. When Hao uses the Over Soul or his Ying Yang Jutsu, his hair goes up in several spikes.

When out in public Hao wears a pair of dark blue jeans and a half buttoned white dress shirt with oversized collars and cuffs.

Personality

During his first life, Asakura Hao was constantly surrounded by the horrors of war and thus saw the world as a grim and dark place, until he met the small demon Ohachiyo, who taught him all the positive aspects of life. However, after an accident involving Hao's first Over Soul, Ohachiyo became a permanent part of Hao and cursed him with the very dangerous ability of Reishi(霊視, Reading the Heart). As he grew into an adult Hao became a relatively peaceful man who sought to help the people around him, and thanks to him the Asakura Family prospered. It was because of this gentle and kind nature that he took in the cat Matamune, who wound up becoming what he considered his 'only friend'.

However, his Reishi abilities became too strong and eventually went beyond his control. The negative emotions and thoughts of others were constantly overwhelming him and, since he was unable to turn his Reishi off, the deluge of negativity eventually created an "Oni" inside his own heart.[2] The internal confusion and disorder that was also created eventually led to his desire of creating a Shaman only Kingdom on earth and drove him to become the Shaman King in order to reach this goal.

In his third and most current incarnation, Hao is usually calm, cruel, and all smiles. The occasions when he is really angry are very rare and when he is angry with someone, that person is usually killed and burned to their soul by The Spirit Of Fire. He also likes to watch Shaman Fights, particularly those that involve strong Shaman, and Asakura Yoh. He is not only interested in that, but also claims that when Yoh reached his limit, he will eat him to become the strongest Shaman.[3]

He has shown some dislike of being given family titles, as he glared at Yoh when the latter adressed him as 'Nii-chan'(Big Brother in japanese), and his face darkened when his nephew, Asakura Hana, called him Uncle Hao. Both times he told the person not to call him that.

Abilities and Powers

Because he has died and reincarnated two times he has a high level of Furyoku, 1,250,000, as of his current life.[4] During his first life, according to Asakura Yohmei, he was so strong that even the strongest Shikigamis swore him loyalty.

Shamanic TechniquesEdit Shamanic Techniques sectionEdit

Hao using his Ying Yang Jutsu

Because Hao has lived for a long time and was reborn twice with with all the knowledge of his previous life, he has many techniques and spells. Most of them learned during his first life.
  • Onmyōdō(陰陽道)

Hao's original abilities of a taijitu master from his first life has given him full control over the elements and divination powers. He is not only able to manipulate the five elements of nature, fire, earth, wood, metal, and water materially, but also spiritually as shown when he converts the Spirit of Fire into the Spirit of Water, albeit temporarily. Even without the spirit of fire, Hao possesses great elemental and divination abilities and can easily bend oni and demigods to his will. However, with the addition of the Spirit of Fire, one can only assume that he can greatly amplify the circular properties of his art by using the it as a power source. However, the spirit of fire uses mostly physical attacks, and on occasion its fire attributes have been used to combat. Since Hao is fond of the element fire, he is rarely seen using his taijitu arts in both the manga and the anime. Nevertheless, the combination that his Onmyōdō abilities and the Spirit of Fire forms definitely gives him an Oversoul second in power only to one with the Great Spirit.

  • Reishi(霊視, Reading the Heart)

This is the ability to read the hearts of others. Whilst in some ways a useful ability, it is incredibly hard to control, with the end result that Hao was constantly inundated with the thoughts of those surrounding him. As a result, his contempt for the human race grew until he sought to create a world of only shamans.

  • Ritual of Taizan Fukun(泰山府君祭)

Taizan Fukun is the ancient Chinese name for the King of Hell, who judges the dead and decides their fate. It is through this technique that Hao was able to be reborn 500 years later as one of the Patch, and then again 500 years later in the Asakura family. This is probably one of his greatest achivements, because to get to Taizan Fukun, one has to get passed the 75 Lords of Hell, something not even spirits can achieve easily and they can access the underworld far easier than a living human. It is notable that he achieved this in his first time, when he was at his weakest, hinting at his future potential.

  • Curse Reflection

Curse Reflection is a skill used once by Hao during the invasion of the secret Patch island by the military, when Amano Teruko tried to use her special skill, 2'O Clock Curse, which backfired and killed her instantly. It appears that Hao used this technique subconsciously, not showing any signs of acknowledging her presence.

Spirit

His first Guardian Ghost was a demon named Ohachiyo. He was once a human but would eventually become a small demon resembling a rabbit with exaggerated long ears. Hao only used him once to create a small kanabo Over Soul with a broken katana as a medium.[5]

As an adult during his first life Hao would use his onmyōdō(陰陽道) magic to turn the shikigamis Zenki and Kouki into demi-god spirits, who he would later use to guard his book of teachings, the Chou Senji Ryakketsu. It was also during this time that he gave a cat he had saved, Matamune, a portion of his furyoku to keep with him after Hao had died.

When he reincarnated into the Patch Tribe, Hao stole the Spirit of Fire, one of five elemental spirits created from the Great Spirit itself. However as he reincarnated again, so did the Spirit of Fire, and Hao has, as of his third life, been constantly feeding it the souls of those he has killed to make it stronger.

Having won the Shaman Fight, Hao has become the new Shaman King and has assimilated with the Great Spirit. This grants him both omniscience and omnipotence. He is now able to absorb other souls simply by looking at them.

History

First Life

"Mappa Douji" and Ohachiyo

Born in Japan by Asanoha Douji, he was named Asaha Douji (麻案童子, Asaha Doji) by his mother. However, later a group of humans killed Asanoha, because they thought that she was a demon. Having his house burnt, Hao wandered and lived aimlessly, believing himself to be a boy with demonic powers and thought of exterminate all humans. However, one day while sitting by a gate, he met a spirit named Ohachiyo (乙破千代) and they quickly became friends. Ohachiyo gave him the nickname Mappa Douji (地図童子, meaning "demon boy") and convinced him to forget his vengeance towards humans and rather enjoy the aspects of life. Ohachiyo taught him things such as the skill of fishing, the sweetness of candy, the names of different song birds, and most importantly the ability of Reishi (that allows one to read the mind of others) and with that he started to have a peaceful life.

Hao followed his word and lived life with a smile, for a moment at least. However, when a guard apparently heard Hao conversing with himself at night, he immediately suspected Hao of being a demon, and reported to Monk Densen, a known exorcist. Densen proved to be a fraud, and was easily overpowered, however this battle also proved to be a breaking point in Hao's path to evil. Hao recognized the man to be the one who killed his mother, and with his first oversoul, performed his first murder. By over depleting his Furyoku, Hao was unable to maintain control of his powers and unintentionally consumed Ohachiyo's power

Onmyōji Asakura Hao

With the experience of his childhood, Hao had tasted the power of a Shaman. He proved to be a genius in the divine abilities and his skills flourished with time. Hao grew to possess a good nature and he began training to become a onmyōji that eliminated demons. Due his loneliness Hao created an Oni, but that wasn't a problem to him because he had the ability to control demons. During that time Hao met Matamune a stray cat. Hao stated that Matamune was his only true friend, and gave it some of his spiritual energy in the hopes that Matamune would stay with him forever. N

Nevertheless, the curse implanted on Hao from Ohachiyo was permanent and eventually drew Hao mad. Hao eventually learns of the Shaman King[6], and comes to believe it is the key to cleansing the world of non-shamans, which he felt were defiling the natural world. His plans to create a shaman-only world where discovered and the Asakura clan stood against him and managed to kill him

Second Life

Patch Hao

However, Hao's Ying-Yang jutsu, the mastery of the five elements of nature (fire, metal, wood, earth, water), prevented his permanent death as he could now control the circumstances of his reincarnation. He was able to gain the ability to control his soul using the ritual of Taizan Kuzun, one of the greatest and most esoteric of Onmyodo arts, and an old name for the god of the underworld. Though Taizan Kuzun could only be reached by getting past the seventy five Lords of Hell, succeeding in making a contract with him gives one the ability to resurrect the dead or reincarnate themselves at will. The fact that Hao was able to perform this act as a living human being is a testament to his power, given that not even ghosts can reach Taizan Kuzun.

Hao then chose to be reincarnated as a Patch Tribe member, the ones that organized the Shaman king Tournament, and then he stole the Spirit of Fire from the Patch tribe. During this time he also had a wife and a child. With his new Guardian Ghost, Hao conquered many enemies with ease, including the Five Seminoa Warriors, who after hearing his goals decided stop him.

He once again projected his idea of a shaman world, but was rejected by the shamans he was trying to promote. He again had the same plans of conquering the world and killing all humans, but he was stopped by Asakura Yohken and Matamune. Despite the fact that he died before becoming Shaman King, he achieved his goal of capturing the legendary Spirit of Fire for use as his guardian ghost in his next life. The wife and child he left behind were about to be killed, when the Patch Tribe realized that they where now missing a priest, so they allowed both of them to live in order to keep the line of Patch Priests. As a result, several generations later Silva of the Ten Patch Officiants was born from the same lineage of Patch Hao.

Third Life

Past

After being killed as Patch Hao he chose to be reborn into his original blood line to become stronger. His actions were foreseen by Asakura Yohmei and it was decided that Hao should be killed upon his rebirth. However, when Yohmei was about to strike the infant he hesitated, and that was enough for Hao to summon the Spirit of Fire. Mikihisa placed himself in the way after Hao tried to kill Yohmei with a punch, and got badly burned in the process. Hao then told Keiko to stay still as he did not wish his important other half to die before being born. With these words he laughed and disappeared.

After escaping the Asakura family he was apparently raised by Brocken Meyer. When he was five or six he and Brocken left their home looking for followers. Wherever Hao went, he left a path of destruction in his wake. He killed Lyserg's parents when they recognized him as an great evil and tried to stop him, maimed Cebin Mendel for no reason, killing military units when he was looking for Mohamed Tabarsi. He also destroyed the church-orphanage home of Marco and killed his entire family. Soon, already at the age of 8, Hao had gathered himself an incredible amount of followers that he would teach many of his own personal techniques, such as the Fumon Tonkou.

Shaman Fights Second Round

Invading the Plants

Hao sleeping to gain the Great Spirit

After the end of the Second Rounds of the Shaman Fights the Patch brought Team "Hoshi-Gumi", Team "The Ren", Team "Funbari Onsen", and Team "X-I" to the Continent of Mu, where the third and final rounds would be held. But instead of continuing the competition, the other three teams forfeited, thus making Hao the new Shaman King. Lip and Rap then proceeded to lead him through the Plants to the Kings Sanctuary where Hao would sleep a pseudo like death while being united with Great Spirit. When he finally awakens he sends a message to the Oracle Bells that reads "'so small" .

He effortlessly kills everyone with a simple glance, excluding Rutherfor, Opacho and Yoh. Opacho commented that the Hao she knew wasn't here anymore and Yoh was able to deduce that Hao was controling his body even though his spirit had already moved on as the Shaman King. Yoh then states that this Hao is nothing but a walking corpse and decapitates it.[7] Hao however doesn't die most likely due to being omnipotent after his merge with the Great Spirit.

After he grins, Yoh's soul and Amidamaru are seen being absorbed by Hao. When Yoh wakes up, he realises he must be inside the Great Spirit and Hao appears, revealing that he's actually inside him and in the highest society of the Great Spirit, the society of the Shaman King where only people Hao wishes to enter may come. The two start a conversation during which Yoh reveals that he too dislikes humans because they really are destroying the Earth. But he also admits that he could never go as far as to kill them, so Hao orders him to leave. Somehow Yoh isn't banished and Tao Ren, Lyserg Diethel, Chocolove McDonell and Usui Horokeu appear too. Then a fierce battle between the 5 Elemental Warriors and the Shaman King begins.

Yoh and his friends give a battle that no one forgets and the battle ends up a fight of the forces of earth vs the power of the universe. The battle is so evenly matched that the fight ends in a complete stalemate until Hao reveals that the fight was merely his preparations for their defeat and creates a supernova that developes into a black hole. As the five are beeing dragged in a train appears out of nowhere, anchoring the five. Onboard are all the people Hao killed when he became king, as well as the dead family members and friends of the Five Elemental Warriors. Yoh finally manages to calm Hao by letting Opacho jump into a black hole, which Hao stops immediately because of the bond between them.

Hao realizes that his quest was not for what he has become but for something else that he could not remember. The Asakura family says that his quest started because of his mother. Yoh finally knows what Hao is after and tells him that his mother was always beside him as a ghost. Hao sees that his mother could have been his guardian ghost and oversoul but he was so blinded by his quest that he could not see the truth. When his mother arrives on the scene Hao appears overjoyed to see her again, even though she slaps him for all that he had done and embarresse him in front of everyone. Afterwards, he lets everyone return to Earth, but tells Yoh that he still hates humans, but will let them sort out their problems before he passes judgement, and not to be so impertinent. At the end of the series, it shows Hao watching over Yoh and his friends happily, implying that he finally let go of his hatred and accepted his role as Shaman King.

It is also implied that Matamune and Hao have finally made amends, as Hao is seen smiling at a small striped cat that smiles back.

Funbari no Uta

Years later he appears before his nephew Asakura Hana, and tells him that he is about to meet with his future wife.

Japanese Name: Pascal Avaf
English Name: n/a
Meaning: n/a
Type: Seirei Class

Chocolove McDonell (チョコラブ・マクダネル Chokorabu Makudaneru, Joco in the english anime) is one of the main characters in the manga and anime series of Shaman King.

Appearance

He is African American boy of average height. He always has his hair in an Afro shape. He wears an African wrap on the lower half of his body, an open white dress shirt and cloth booths as his street clothes. When in battle he wears a black and golden lined open vest and a different wrap to increase his speed.

When he lived in America during the cold times, he wore yellow pants, nickers, a black jersy and a red wool hat.

Personality

Chocolove likes to tell jokes to his companions a lot; the only draw back is that his jokes/puns are corny (at times involving mistranslation/mispronunciation of Japanese words and phrases) and make no sense most of the time. The others have the tendency to run after him or beat him up after telling a joke (or in Ren's case, poking his nose with one of his weapons). Typically, he gets on people's nerves with his jokes; however, the anime has shown there are a few moments where people enjoyed them. Yoh occasionally let off a light chuckle to them, and both Tamao and Pirika laugh hysterically (Pirika takes some time to understand the jokes, and Tamao had her spirits explain it to her before she cracks up). One time, Ren states that he is jealous of Chocolove's courage to tell an obviously corny joke.

His goal in life is to be the Shaman King and a great comedian because he was inspired by his master. Both of them believe that laughter is the best medicine, so even if people do not believe that his jokes are that funny, he does not give up and he tries even harder to achieve his goal to give the world what it needs the most, laughter.

Abilities and Powers

Chocolove is a supposed comedian but in reality is not really funny, although one of his jokes did save his friends. His oversoul is different than most shamans since he and and Mick literally become one. This uses the full power of both Chocolove and Mick at the same time but is taxing since they both have to be synced the entire time they are oversouled. While in his oversoul, he tells a joke which only the spirits seemed to understand (the other shamans responded with an ellipsis...). Most of his techniques involve making spirits (and very rarely, humans) laugh, making them a vulnerable target to attack. After going blind, some of his other senses seemed to have been increased as he is able to smell the position, of Yoh and the others, who were currently at the time running from Golem.

His oversoul with Pascal is a giant stone head. It is the same as most other shaman in the sense that he is literally using Pascal as a weapon but it also differs than most shaman in that it uses absolutely no attacks. Instead it provides Chocolove the power to literally walk on air and move at an incredible speed. While fighting his way through the Plants, Kyōyama Anna looked through the Furyoku values of Chocolove and the others. There it is revealed that his Furyoku is about 197,500, thus giving him the highest Furyoku reserve of the Five Elemental Warriors.[1] He also possesses the power of wind, allowing him to use his Furyoku to erode anything in his vicinity.

Spirits

Chocolove and Mic

His former master used to own a guardian ghost named Mic Jaguar(Mic in the english anime) (a takeoff from Mick Jagger), who was passed down to Chocolove when he died. With Mic he creates an Over Soul in a pair of Shaft Claws on his right hand and the rest of his body, thus giving Chocolove the speed and keen senses of Mic.

In the manga, he gains a second spirit guardian named Pascal Avaf(パスカル・ァパフ). With the power of Pascal Avaf, Chocolove creates his new armor oversoul, O.S. "Jaguarman"(O.S. ジャガーマン). Chocolove killed Redseb's and Seyram's father (the man he killed on Christmas) before he repented under his teacher, and thus decided to become blind in order to atone for his sins.

During the second rounds of the manga the also became the strongest of the Five Elemental Warriors and attuned his Furyoku to that of wind. He also gains the Spirit of Wind, that according to Pascal Avaf has the ability to slice the wind with it's wings.[2]

History

Past

He was born on October 2, 1985. His parents were murdered on a Christmas day, and Chocolove was brought up in the streets, where he eventually became the leader of a gang named Shaft. After killing a man on Christmas day with his gang members, Chocolove walks alone on the streets, reflecting on the horrible murder of his parents on the very same day years ago(this resentment of the day and humankind is why he shot the man mentioned earlier). After making a little comment, a old man named Orona appears and makes a pun with a sight gag using fake blood. After telling him to go away, Chocolove shoots his gun, but Orona dodges all his shots. Saying that he could not use laughter to help Chocolove, Orona uses his oversoul with Mic to punch him. The fact that Chocolove laughs at Orona's comment about using laughter to save the world and that Chocolove sees Mic forges a relationship between the two.

Shaman Fights Second Round

Chocolove was first shown during the three month wait at the patch village. He was the one who explained the team stipulation to Yoh and company. Ren quickly put his team together. Ren and his team was paired against Hao's Earth team in the first match of the second round. The BoZ Brothers attacked first and was easily defeated by Chocolove's Shaft attack. Peyote then used the BoZ Brothers as mediums for his oversoul. Chocolove tried to fight back but was almost defeated by them. He then remembered his past and pulled out the winds of laughter and the Ayers Rock Sunrise. This forced the spirits within the BoZ Brothers to laugh and freed them from Peyote's control. Chocolove, however, ran out of power and fainted, beeing saved in the last minute by Ren who finished off Peyote and won the match.

When he goes to see his friends(the shaft gang members)he sees that they were shot in the head by Redseb and Seyram who are using their golem robot, and shot Chocolove. After training in hell with his former master Orona, Chocolove returns to help his friends and reveals he have obtained a new spirit "Pascal Avaf" and a new oversoul he named O.S. "Jaguarman"(O.S. ジャガーマン).

Invading the Plants

Chocolove enters the plants with Yoh and his friends but does not really do much except provide assistance when needed.

When they reach the plant of the Ocean everyone else has problems getting through Thalim's plant type oversoul. Chocolove steps up and battles him. Thalim unleashes oversoul Rafflesia to combat choco's enhanced sense of smell easily overwhelming his nose. Chocolove overcomes it by stabbing his claws into his nose forcing himself to smell blood instead of the flower. Thalim then uses his O.S. Great Impatiens Balsam to attack from every angle. Chocolove begins to think about the powers the five of them have gained from training in hell, and reveals that he has yet to discover his power of wind.

Chocolove realizing the power of Erosion

As Thalim fires the gigantic seeds at him, Chocolove dissolves his Armor Over Soul and uses Pascal Avaf and Mic to Over Soul with the air itself as a medium and manipulates air currents literally eroding away all of Thalim's plants.[3] Thalim then reveals that he knew such an attack would come and hoped to defeat Chocolove before he himself would realize it. Chocolove only chuckles and asks about his full strenght and exclaims his turn to attack creating Ayers Rock one more and ending the fight.

Chocolove is later seen being carried out of the plant by Ryu complaining that Thalim was not fighting at full power.[4] They all then enters the 9th Plant of the Glacier to face Silva of the Ten Patch Officiants. There he and the others watch the fight between Yoh and Silva, that Silva calls Yoh's final test, which he eventually passes.[5]

As the group finally arrives at the 10th and final "Plant of the Universe" they realize that there is no oxygen and no gravity and begin to wonder how they are supposed to fight in there. At first Lyserg suggest that they all protect themself with their own personal O.S. but Ryu suddenly interrtups and suggest that they all use the heads of his O.S. Yamato No Orochi so that the rest can fight at full strenght. As Ren questions the responsibility he would suddenly have he says that he wants to be usefull too as the seven is currently his best place.[6]

When Hao finally awakens he sends a message to the Oracle Bells that reads "'so small" He arrives at the final plant and effortlessly kills everyone with a simple glance, excluding Rutherfor, Opacho and Yoh. After Hao attempts to banish Yoh from his area in the Great Spirit Ren, Lyserg, Chocolove and Horohoro appear within it, with the Five Grand Elemental Spirits. A fierce battle between the 5 Elemental Warriors and the Shaman King begins.[7]

Funbari no Uta

22 Year Old Chocolove

In the "Funbari no Uta" miniseries, Chocolove is now 22 years old. He is noticeably taller and more muscular and buff. He has also shaved his head clean.

During the time skip, Chocolove has tried to make amends of his earlier crimes, by turning himself in. He is currently doing time in jail, having about ten years to go according to Umemiya Ryunosuke[8]. On the request of Tamamura Tamao, Ryo and Asakura Hana was to break him out of jail and bring him and the other Five Elemental Warriors back to the Funbari Onsen, to bring business back to the Onsen.

He arrived at the meeting place of the five warriors with Lyserg who relieved him of his prison sentence early.

He goes to the party with Yoh and the others, getting hurt by mostly Ren for the jokes he still has.

Lyserg Diethel(リゼルグ・ダイゼル, Rizerugu Daizeru) is a fictional character from the manga and anime series of Shaman King. He is orphaned from a young age, when Asakura Hao killed his parents for refusing to join him. This makes him seeks revenge, and eventually made him participate in the Shaman Fights to kill Hao. He would eventually join the extremist group known as the X-Laws, believing they would help him gain his revenge.

Appearance

Lyserg in his X-Laws Uniform

Lyserg has a very adrogynous appearance, at first meeting being mistaken for a girl by Umemiya Ryunosuke. He has light green hair and green eyes, which he inherited from his father.

He dresses in a similar fashion as his father, and in both cases their outfits were probably a homage to Sherlock Holmes. His clothes consist of a green cloak, a white shirt with a white folded handkerchief and black pants and black leather shoes.

After Lyserg joined the X-Laws, Marco began training him and after swearing loyalty he was given a classical white uniform similar to the others.[1]. The main difference between his uniform and the others is that his skirt is completely open with nothing beneath but a pair of white short shorts and black boots, with bare legs. When not in his X-Laws uniform he wears a white dress shirt, with rolled up sleeves, a tie and suspenders, and a pair of short shorts, with his gun holster on the left side[2]

After training in hell, he discards his X-Laws uniform, and begins wearing clothes similar to his original ones except that he now wears a black cloak with a dark green lining, dark green short shorts. He wears a white dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, a white folded handkerchief and long dark green sea boots.[3][4]

Personality

The main antagonist Asakura Hao, killed his parents while he was young and since then he has sought out revenge on Hao.

At first, Lyserg joins with Asakura Yoh and the others, but later joins the X-Laws, a group dedicated to destroying Hao. When Lyserg joins them he is unsure about the ways the X-Laws try to eliminate Hao. Though Lyserg holds great hatred for Hao, Yoh's own philosophies and personalities keep him from crossing the line. In the anime, Lyserg abandons his spirit Morphine for an angel spirit called Zeruel, but in the manga they are inseparable.

For his character, Lyserg is rather unstable when it comes to parent-child situations. He has a generally kind heart, although he becomes a bit of an anti-hero. Lyserg's goals are to take revenge on Hao and to become a great detective much like his father. He is very passionate in his hatred for Hao, and will snap at the sight or sometimes even the mention of him. He also loves reading Detective and Mystery stories (Probably in memory of his Father).

Abilities and Powers

Lyserg is a dowser, a person who is able to find a person or persons using his special abilities. Lyserg uses his Crystal Pendulum for dowsing and even for spirit control. While fighting his way through the Plants, Kyōyama Anna looked through the Furyoku values of Chocolove and the others. There it is revealed that his Furyoku is about 170,500, thus giving him the second highest Furyoku reserve of the Five Elemental Warriors.[5]

Spirits

Morphine

His guardian ghost is known as Morphine (Chloe in the English anime; Morphea in the English manga). Morphine is the spirit that has been passed down from generation to generation in the Diethel family. It is known that she is the spirit of a poppy flower, which to Lyserg is like Horohoro's spirit; a spirit of the Earth. When Lyserg was six, he was given a test for his dowsing skills. He had to find the key to a cage, which was holding Morphine inside. In order for Morphine to be Lyserg's spirit, he had to unlock her from the cage. Although the task of finding the key was difficult, he managed to find it within Big Ben, the famous English clock.

Lyserg and the Spirit of Fire

Lyserg's second spirit is Archangel Zelel (アークエンジェル・ゼルエル) or Zeruel. Zeruel is a mechanical Archangel that runs on the Angel Engine. The Archangels were modeled after sports cars, Zeruel being a Lotus Elise. One day, Marco began wondering where Lyserg's loyalities lay and decided it was time for his new weapon. Marco entrusted him with Zeruel, wanting him to deliver justice with him. Lyserg's first use of this spirit was when he saved Usui Horokeu from Hao's followers.

In the manga Lyserg fuses Morphine and Zeruel together to form his armor oversoul, O.S. Mastema Dolkeem (Flame of Hostility) and attoning his Furyoku to that of the element of Fire. According to Lyserg, Mastema Dolkeem was created to prevent his grudge from taking over his life, and not to fight Hao.

"My Mastema Dolkeem wasn't created for you. The reason behind this O.S.... Yes! I just wanted to prevent the fire of my grudge from burning my soul!"

-Lyserg Diethel to Asakura Hao about his new Over Soul.[6]

Lyserg is also one of the 5 warriors chosen by Lady Sati. He went through hell training which in turn, gave him the power necessary for conquering Hao. After Hao began uniting with the Great Spirit he sent the spirit of Redseb Munzer, with the Spirit of Fire, to Lyserg and his friends, thus finally giving Lyserg the Spirit of Fire. He is called the cleverest of the 5 warriors by Pascal Avaf and is the second strongest among the 5.[7]

History

Past

He was born on May 17, 1986.[8]

Lyserg comes from London, England and was raised by his father Liam Diethel to become a dowser. Lyserg was trained from the age of four to be a drowser. Lyserg eventually used his powers to find the key to Morphine's cage. Morphine became his to control. Lyserg came home to tell his father that he has succeeded in releasing morphine. He returns home only to find Hao standing over the burning corpses of his parents. Hao turns to leave but Lyserg stops him. Lyserg tries Morphine but can not do anything due to his inexperience. Just before Hao knocks out Lyserg he grabs his father's pendulum. Lyserg eventually is rescued by the local firefighters and grows up with his maternal grandfather.

When he was old enough he left his grandfather. Lyserg then traveled throughout England to find who burned down his house and killed his parents.

Shaman Fights

Lyserg being tested by Bron

Lyserg was Qualified by Bron of the Ten Patch Officiants,[9] and the fight took place in the rooftops of Tokyo. It took some doing on Lyserg's part since he could not track Bron, but eventually Morphine tracked him down and hitting him allowing Lyserg to enter the Shaman Fights.[10]

Lyserg's time in the first round is unknown but he did win two matches and go to the second round. Lyserg got on the Patch Plane and was dumped somewhere in the American west

Travel Through America

Lyserg first appears dowsing for others who also sought out to find Patch Village. This had made his Pendulum point to the place, where Asakura Yoh and his friends where staying, for two days.[11] When the group prepares to leave the next day, he appears and calls them to wait. Thinking he is a girl Umemiya Ryunosuke is immediately smitten with him.

Lyserg then gives a full introduction about himself and asks to join the group, to which Yoh politely greets him, much to the shock of the Horohoro and Tao Ren. After a brief debate about him by Horohoro and Ren, Ryu shockingly notes that Ren addresses Lyserg with "he" and asks if Lyserg is a guy to which Lyserg pulls down his pants and shows them proof, scaring Yoh and the gang. Lyserg then goes on to explain his dowsing abillities and reveals his spirit, Morphine.

Lyserg defeats Tao Ren and Horohoro

After a schuffle between Lyserg and Horohoro, Horohoro prepares his snowboard for an attack against Lyserg, to which he shows off his oversoul and strikes Horohoro, who dodges. Suddenly appearing in front of Lyserg, Horohoro reveals his own Over Soul, but the Pendulum Over Soul appears next to him and the pendulum tip is right in his face. Ren prepares to cut the wire with his own fully charged Over Soul, but Lyserg easily incapacitates both Ren and Horohoro by cutting them with the wire and crushing their mediums. Yoh quickly steps in and says that he wants to take his friends to the hospital, while stating that he will show no mercy if Lyserg stands in his way. Loosing his calm demeanor, remembering how he came home to find his parents killed by Hao, he quckly strikes Yoh, only to have his pendulum stopped by the tip of Harusame, and later destroyed by a fully Over Souled Amidamaru.[12]

Lyserg attacks with "Big Ben"

Yoh and Ryu then leave to get Horohoro and Ren to the hospital, but Lyserg, in his anger, reveals a Crystal Pendulum and attacks at full force. Attaching his pendulum to a nearby bilboard sign, Lyserg jumps above Yoh and creates the Big Ben Wire Frame, threatening to completely tear through Yoh.

However seeing Yoh's face being so similar to that of Hao so many years ago Lyserg looses himself and allows Yoh to cut down the attack. Yoh end the fight by punching Lyserg in the face but still allows him to join the group.

The group finally arrives at what is supposed to be the Patch village and encounter Team "Tsuki Gumi" and Team "Kaze-Gumi". Hearing that they are part of Hao's followers, Lyserg moves in to kill them, but Yoh holds him back. After a small bickering with Boris Tepes Dracula, that involves Boris killing his own teammate, Boris appears behind Lyserg and bites him, turning him into a vampire. It is later revealed by Amidamaru that he is possesed by Boris' guardian ghost Blamuro the Vampire Hunter.

Eventually they manage to free Boris' ghost and free Lyserg. Ryu defeats Boris and he faints. Lyserg saves Ryu from falling. The X-Laws kill Boris leaving Lyserg in awe of their power. When the X-laws leave, Lyserg thinks about how incredible they were. As a thanks to Yoh for saving him, "Big Guy" Bill Burton leads the group through the underground caves, until the presence of the Great Spirit makes them all faint from high amounts of spiritual energy.

Lyserg is seen in an empty Room, recovering from the Great Spirit. He finds his way outside still crying and runs into Marco. The X-Laws get Lyserg to join them and together with Marco and Iron Maiden Jeanne, Lyserg forms Team "X-I". The next two months pass uneventfully with Lyserg learning about the X-Laws rules and requirements.

Shaman Fights Second Round

Two months later Team "X-I" is put up against Team "Niles". The fight starts with Lyserg destroying the Nile's mediums and crippling the leader of the opposing team. The Nile's leader uses the Wings of Death and Lyserg fires off a killing attack but stops before it finishes for an unknown reason. Jeanne gets in to the fight by knocking Lyserg aside an asks Marco to unlock her which he obliges. Lyserg then watches Jeanne slaughter the Niles.

Later that night Yoh visits the X-Laws ship and talks to Lyserg. After a short violent confrontation with the remaining X-Laws, Yoh is invited to join the X-Laws by Jeanne heserlf. He refuses however. This in turn causes Jeanne cry and angers Marco. During the same night Lyserg hears the plan of Team "X-III" and how they want to sacrifice themselves to kill Hao. As he pleads them to not do it, he is punished by Marco.[13] He is seen the next day watching the fight with Team "Hoshi-Gumi". There he, while crying, watched in horror as Team "X-III" is all brutally slaughtered by Hao.

Invading the Plants

Lyserg is shown pushing the Iron Maiden (with wheels on it) with the group after Marco saved them from Luchist Lasso. He mourns his loss, believing that Marco will be killed, but is reminded that they have no time to be grieve. Opacho then comes up from behind to comfort him. Lyserg keeps Marco's glasses in his honor.

In the Plant of the Valley, Lyserg faces the next officiant, Bron (who was his mentor in the preliminary rounds), finding out that both of them had gotten stronger since they last fought. Lyserg begins losing his temper a bit and begins to strike. However, he was unable to hit him and was shot in the chest. Bron goes to finish off the others, but they are protected by Iron Maiden Jeanne. She points out that she feels sad and is about to kill Bron who is still coming after them when Lyserg suddenly regains consciousness and stops Bron's attack using his hand. He later faces Jeanne saying,"Please don't. You should not waste your precious furyoku, Lady Maiden," Yoh and the others assumed he was dead, but Lyserg explained that Marco's glasses were bulletproof and that they kept him safe from the blow.

With Bron's anger rising, Lyserg began examining him and thinking about when he could attack. The fight then ends with Lyserg explaining how mind over body works and him performing a move called "Cremation" severly burning and killing Bron.

As Ren questions the responsibility he would suddenly have he says that he wants to be usefull too as the seven is currently his best place.[14]

A fierce battle between the 5 Elemental Warriors and the Shaman King begins.[15]

Funbari no Uta

21 Year Old Lyserg

Lyserg appears in the "Funbari no Uta" miniseries as one of the Five Elemental Warrior cameos. He is given the Spirit of Fire and is considered the second strongest of the warriors[16].

Lyserg is 21 and has physically changed. He has gotten noticeably taller and his hair is no longer messy. He no longer wears his patched shawl. Instead he now sports a black detective trench coat and black hat. In the Visionz images Lyserg is shown wearing a dress suit and it would seem that he wears Marco's glasses at random.[17]

In the final chapter he arrived at the meeting place of the five warriors with Chocolove.

Family

Lyserg's father, Liam Diethel, is a shamanic detective much like Sherlock Holmes. His spirit was Morphine(Chloe in the english anime) and his medium was the pendulum. Both the pendulum and Morphine were handed down to his son, Lyserg. Lyserg's mother, Jean Diethel, has little known history.

Both were killed by the antagonist Asakura Hao for refusing to join him in the upcoming Shaman Fights. When they were killed Lyserg was placed in fostercare at his maternal grandfather.

Johann George Faust VIII(ファウストVIII世, Fausuto Hassei) is a fictional character in the manga and anime series of Shaman King. He is a necromancer and an ally of Asakura Yoh.

Appearance

Faust's Battle Uniform

Faust VIII has a number of traits in his physical appearance that makes him stand out from the other characters in Shaman King. For example, he has discolored lips and permanent bags under his eyes from lack of sleep. Along with his height, these lend him an intimidating presence. Another very noticeable trait is the different color skin sutured onto his chest and torso. This doesn't appear to inconvenience him in any way, but, only makes him look more scary. Amidamaru claims that Faust reeks of death, although none of the human characters can smell it, meaning it's probably a spiritual stench.

Faust has blond hair and blue eyes. He is also extremely thin due to malnutrition. Since Eliza passed away, Faust barely ate and have told Yoh during their first fight that he eats only the minimum necessary to stay alive.

In the manga, Faust has his own battle uniform, made by Anna. It consists of a white, half-torn shirt with a pointy collar and pointy manchetes. He wears black pants which cut off at the knee, with a pouch filled with medical supplies strapped to each thigh. On his back is an advertisement for Funbari Onsen.

When sitting in his wheelchair, he wears his usual clothing, a large coat, a top hat and a blanket to hide his missing legs. He usually wear his skeleton medium in chains attached to his arms and hidden underneath his overcoat and Eliza's orignal skull either resting in his lap or hiden under his hat. In the second round, there's a flag attached to his wheelchair that's another advertisement for the onsen.

Personality

Faust is usually a very detailed and patient person who thinks scientifically unless the matter concerns his beloved Eliza. He does not tolerate interruptions while working, an example was having Eliza keep the X-Laws at bay while he attempted to help Jeanne, and even less any criticism, insults or threats directed at Eliza. Despite he doesn't get upset when someone insults him.

Faust is the embodiment of dedication; he has given up everything for his wife and is willing to do anything to protect and take care of her. It is this single-mindedness and selflessness that gives him his great strength in the Shaman Fight. Beyond all the mental instability, emotional suffering and somewhat gothic moods, his greatest strength comes from his pure heart; pure because he knows that he only lives to love and protect his dear Eliza.

Faust is an insane but incredibly brilliant medical doctor who delights in saving lives. Naturally, his work reveals facets of his personality. In the anime, he cures his opponents' son after defeating them, despite many other doctors having previously given up on the boy. When he treats Jeanne of the X-laws, he does so with zeal that nears madness. During the time in between matches, he is usually reading medical books, and feeds himself breakfast, lunch, and dinner through an I.V. line.

Abilities & Powers

Faust VIII and Eliza Faust's Skeleton

Necromancy, the art of reviving the bodies of the deceased, is Faust's most important shamanistic technique. He is able to animate large numbers of human and animal skeletons, but cannot by any means, arcane or scientific, bring back the dead. It should be noted, though, that during the finals of the Shaman Fights, Faust does indeed master the art of resurrection, allowing him to actually revive the dead, as long as their bodies are not damaged beyond repair.

To animate the remains, typically skeletons, he uses the skill Bone Dead Reborn, which calls nearby spirits to inhabit buried skeletons, which he can then fully command. Because Faust specifically specializes in necromancy, he can do this with only minimal furyoku, giving each skeleton only enough to allow it to move.

His skeletons have a powerful vice-like grip, and each skeleton has the strength of an adult male. Even his opponent in the preliminaries, Asakura Yoh, could not break free of the grip until a surge of pure desperation gave him barely enough strength to escape.

In addition to his Necromancy, Faust can use the traditional Oversoul technique that all shamans know. He uses Eliza's skeleton as the focus, as well as a large scythe-like polearm. While during his first appearance, Eliza's soul is not used in the oversoul, and Faust merely creates her image by pumping his furyoku into her skeleton. Faust eventually regain her soul, thus beeing able to bring her back through a normal Over Soul, using her skull and spirit.

Faust's 20-Ton Calcium Skeleton

His strongest attack (in the preliminary fight against Yoh) is called the "20-Ton Calcium Giant," which combines thousands of skeletons into an enormous giant, which Faust can manipulate with his spiritual power He is also able to use the bones lying in graves to create cages to encase opponents.

Faust's mastery of the medical arts allow himself to patch up his own wounds in the middle of combat. He can do (often painful) things no normal doctor can do to themselves due to the fact he is a heavy user of morphine. Before every fight, he pumps enough morphine into his system to make him feel completely numb for a few hours, which allows him to repair any damage to his body without the hindrance of pain. One instance of this was when Yoh broke his leg during their fight, and instead of letting the bone heal on its own, Faust tore the broken bone right out of his leg and had Eliza bring him another similar in size. Afterwards, Faust replaced his missing bone and was able to stand within minutes. A second instance was when the shamans were dropped out of a plane to be tested on how they would survive the great fall. Faust passed by Horohoro, laughing about how he had injected so much morphine that he would not die from the impact. He would just let himself fall, stitch himself back up, and be on his merry way.

Among other abilities, he seems to be a talented singer. He is first seen at the river bank during the start of the second round, singing about Eliza and how he lost her and later, when fighting Radim, he successfully copied the attributes of the Patch Song to create an advertisement for the Funbari Onsen, called "Funbari No Uta" to energize himself and his teammates. The song seems to work, and afterwords he is able to revive himself, a feat he had earlier stated was impossible due to lack of Furyoku.[1]

Faust's power does not come directly from Eliza so he has to rely exclusively on his doctor's skills and his necromancy.

While fighting his way through the Plants, Kyōyama Anna looked through the Furyoku values of Faust and the others. There it is revealed that his Furyoku is about 12,500.[2]

Shamanic Magic

  • Bone Dead Reborn: using the basic principle of his necromancy he uses his furyoku to bring forth skeletons that are buried in the ground.
  • Bone Shell: using the skeletons from bone dead reborn he creates a massive hollow shell of bones. This defense is weak since Yoh busted through it with little problem.
  • Skull Scrummage: Faust moves the skeletons from bone dead reborn in a high speed line like football scrimmage.

Spirit

Eliza is Faust's first, only, and one true love. Sadly, she developed a fatal disease as a child, which would eventually have torn her away from Faust. As the only woman to care for himself, he, in return, slaved over his studies to find a cure for her, which he did find. After her recovery, they married each other and opened a clinic together. She and Faust had a happy life together, which was however cut short, by a burgulary. A robber, breaking into their clinic at night, shot Eliza, who was the only one in the clinic at the time. This wound went straight through her brain, instantly killing her. During the story, her revival is Faust's dream, which is why he works to become Shaman King. As Faust grows stronger, she becomes more lifelike. Although he was unable to revive her yet, Anna was able to summon her spirit back to Earth allowing Faust to communicate and see her. Because of this Faust's power became even stronger because of the fact that he now uses a real human spirit for his oversoul.

She was born on June 29, 1963 and was 26 when she died. Her blood type is AB.

History

Past

Faust in his childhood

Faust, like his family, wanted nothing to do with his ancestor's black magic. He is a direct descendant of Johann Faust, traced back in his family line, who had practiced this art as his ancestor did, Faust the First. (Faustus) It was a dark secret, and Faust's family intended on keeping it hidden.

When he was young, he met a girl named Eliza who was a patient of his father's but had an incurable illness. Because she was the only one outside of the family who ever showed care for him, Faust worked to his greatest potential to become a doctor and find a cure for Eliza. He succeeded, becoming a master of the medical field and Eliza was cured. They fell in love and were married, and ran their own medical clinic.

Faust got a beautiful mansion near the seaside, and it seemed that his life with Eliza could not be more perfect. Unfortunately, one day while Faust VIII was out in town, a burglar broke into his house where Eliza was home alone. The criminal shot her in the forehead, killing her. Faust arrived at home and saw this horrible scene, and tried all of his medical skills to save Eliza, to no effect.

He became obsessed with bringing her back to life, and thus delved into the ancient practice of necromancy. He even dug up her skeleton to at least be with her. For eight years Faust worked in his arts, never sleeping at all, which is why he has dark shadows under his eyes and purple lips. He enters the Shaman Fight in order to become Shaman King and use the power to resurrect Eliza.

Shaman Fight, First Round

Asakura Yoh and Faust VIII first meet in a cemetery of Yokohama where they are to be opponents for the Shaman Fight. Arguably one of the most dangerous shamans ever, stories hinting of Faust's power have already rippled throughout in the rumors of priests who have come to referee the ongoing Shaman Fights. One of the Shaman Fight Officiants, Silva, tries vainly to persuade Anna into making Yoh forfeit the match. He fears for Yoh's life, because Faust had proven himself merciless. He killed his first opponent and seriously injured the officiant who tried to intervene. This match's field, moreover, is obviously in any Necromancer's favor, for it is a graveyard. This is a great advantage to a shaman like Faust. However, Anna adamantly turns down Silva's request, insisting Yoh will fight well.

When Anna and Silva arrive to watch the match, they are stunned to find out the fight has already begun. Faust has summoned an army of skeletons to attack Yoh. Faust partially dissects Manta, leaving him in intense pain. Faust's actions trigger Yoh's rage. The younger shaman tries to break free of Faust's skeleton army, and succeeds, although doing so, along with destroying skeleton after skeleton, has depleted his furyoku greatly.

Throughout the fight, as the horrific truth is revealed, Faust used less than one percent of his furyoku on reanimating each skeleton. The reason given by Silva is that Faust uses very little energy to animate the skeletons. While Faust is still in mint condition for the match, Yoh has become extremely battle-weary, his energy used up, and his furyoku burning down to just a small flame of energy above the hilt of his sword. To finish Yoh off, Faust's true spirit ally finally emerges as he transfers his attention to creating Eliza's form on her skeleton. Eliza, while far from being the strongest foe Yoh has ever faced, becomes formidable now that his energy is almost gone.

Faust tries to kill Yoh

Yoh enrages Faust by calling Eliza a 'doll' because she has no will of her own. This enrages Faust to a horrific level so that he appears an insane man. He starts to recklessly expend energy, leaving him weakened. Yoh focuses his remaining furyoku at the tip of his sword, Harusame, and cuts the legs off of Eliza's skeleton. While this attack leaves Eliza useless in combat, it depletes the rest of Yoh's furyoku. Amidamaru falls out of Harusame, and Yoh loses the match. Yoh breaks down crying at nearly losing his friend, his life, and his dream. Amidamaru tells Yoh that his philosophy of letting things work themselves out and not worrying about the outcome of events is as much a form of courage as any other.

Faust, out of pure, blind rage creates a bone yard giant, a 20 ton "calcium giant" made completely out of skeletons, with the full intend of killing Yoh for damaging Eliza. Tao Ren arrives however and destroyes the bone giant with a single attack, revealing that he did so because he needs Yoh to be alive, since he is his next opponent.

Right before the opening ceremony of the Shaman Fight, Faust is seen watching the fight between Ren and Yoh where it is revealed that he gave his legs to Eliza, and has become confined to a wheelchair.

Shaman Fight, Second Round

Faust, Eliza and Frankensteiny

He is later shown at the Patch Village. There, he is found at the water side by Manta, who sees Faust stitching himself up after the long drop from the Patch Jumbo Jet. He is later seen coming towards Yoh with Manta saying that he found him passed out. He then tells Yoh that he is looking for teammates for the second event of the Shaman Fight. While Ryu and Yoh initially reject his offer to help in favor of Lyserg Diethel's, Anna explains that she has never met Lyserg, but has seen Faust's immense power and superhuman determination firsthand. She theorizes that if she uses her itako powers to resurrect Eliza with "true necromancy," Faust will allow her to develop his powers even further and give her his loyalty, ultimately hoping that Faust will be the doctor at the resort she hopes to run. Since it would also be beneficial to have a doctor on their team, Anna gets Faust to join Team "Funbari Onsen" along with Yoh and Ryu. During the two months that then passes on Faust trains with Yoh and Ryu with the Cho Senji Rakketsu.

During the first fight of the second round he sits with Anna, Ryu and Yoh. There he watches the fight of Team "The Ren" and seems to get angry at Peyote Diaz for using bones in his fight. He then announces that if they met him in the third round he will personally take care of him.

While fighting the Team "Icemen" in the third fight, he is the first to be attacked because they see him as the weakest. Crushing his wheelchair he reveals his ability to stand up with the bones of his dead dog Frankensteiny. He also reveals his new devotion to Yoh and Anna, and also reveals that he can use the bones of his dead dog as legs, that also have an incredible jumping power. He then reveals his new oversouls and christens it "Mephisto E" ("E" from the initial of Eliza's name), a reference to the original Faust legend. However, he does apologize to Eliza every time he must put her in harm's way, even though she is still a spirit. Eliza then shrugs of the attack of the Icemen. Later on he explains that the reason why he, nor Ryu has not attacked is because Yoh has declared that he will defeat the Icemen with one blow.

Invading the Plants

As Yoh and the others begin another battle they come across the Patch announcer Radim of the Ten Patch Officiants. After a very quick conversation it saddens him to fight his friends but decides he must be loyal to the Patch. He attacks and shatters Yoh's oversoul to which a fierce battle starts one even Chocolove McDonell wasn't able to win.

During a lenghty battle with Radim Faust continues to deplete his Furyoku by constantly healing himself and dies after singing the "Funbari No Uta" to Yoh and their companions. After his death Faust is finally able to be with Eliza in spirit form but continues on with Yoh in spirit form, while his and Radim's bodies are left behind.[3] When Horohoro was hurt in his fight against Kalim, Yoh use Hyoui Gattai with Faust to heal Horohoro ironically changing his role from shaman to spirit.[4]
